Historic Underground
In the clear blue waters of Conception Bay, there is Bell Island, a small scenic island with a big history. From 1895 to 1966 almost 80 million tons of Bell Island Ore was sent around the world.
There is about three and a half billion tons of iron ore over an area of aproximately seventy square miles which extends out to sea. Only ten square miles were mined during its operation.
Miners laboured with only candle light to help them, and had to load a full ore cart containing 1.8 tons every hour for only twelve and a half cents.
This early underground mine used horses to help pull ore cars to the surface.
The horse miners were well attended to, and lived in stables that were underground. Some horses worked the mine for 16 years and retired to grazing the meadows of Bell Island.
