The Belle of the Bay
A twenty minute ferry ride on Conception Bay will bring you to Bell Island, a great place to tour, and an excellent day trip from Holyrood Conception Bay, while you explore the Avalon Peninsula. The ferry ride by itself is worth the trip, you can enjoy the spectacular scenery and fresh sea air. You may even see a whale or sea birds while crossing the tickle.
The island was once a thriving mining community, you can see giant murals that commemorate the islands proud heritage. Visit the miner's museum and see the many artifacts, including samples of the iron ore that made Bell Island one of the most important mining operations in the world. Tours of an abandoned underground mine can be booked seven days per week by dialing (709)488-2880. Group Tours are welcome. Have a guided tour of everything Bell island has to offer. The island has also seen a rare meteorological phenomenon called Ball Lightning. IN 1978 scientists and military personal from as far away as Los Alamos, New Mexico came to inspect the site. You can still see holes left from the blast.

Bell Island has many wonderful things to offer the outdoor enthusiast and adventurer. Natural walking trails can bring you around the island and you can see many kinds of birds and so other wildlife, awe inspiring cliffs and spectacular natural surroundings. There are freshwater ponds and sandy beaches along the shoreline for swimming too.
